GCCA POSITION STATEMENT: Glen Cove Waterfront Park
February 10, 2005
Greater Vallejo Recreation District Board of Directors 395 Amador Street Vallejo, CA 94590
Dear Board of Directors:
For nearly twenty years, residents of Vallejo and the Glen Cove Community Association (GCCA) have patiently looked forward to the opening of the Glen Cove Waterfront Park. We are encouraged that GVRD has arranged for the creation of a new master plan and that a decision will soon be made regarding the future of the Stremmel building.
We are concerned, however, that proponents of the Vallejo Inter-Tribal Council (VIC) continue to demand that this land be closed to the public. Contrary to the misleading campaign being waged by the VIC, the GCCA does not support the desecration of this land. In fact, we have clearly stated our desire that the Glen Cove Waterfront Park remain as natural and undisturbed as possible. The GCCA urges GVRD to preserve the important history of this land and to ensure the safety of visitors to the park site by implementing the following:
* Removing buildings, including the Stremmel structure
* Eliminating parking lots, restrooms, lighting, existing pavement, oil tanks, and any other elements that destroy the peaceful, natural setting
* Carefully preserving historic and culturally important sites by adding a protective layer of soil from re-graded areas
* Planning appropriate trails and plantings to deter public access from sensitive areas
* Removing fire hazards, including weed abatement and necessary pruning
* Addressing other safety issues, such as trash removal and re-grading to correct improper drainage
* Removing invasive plant species and re-planting low maintenance, slow-growing native varieties
* Continuing support of the Bay Area Ridge Trail and Bay Trail
The GCCA supports the opening of the Glen Cove Waterfront Park so that all citizens can safely enjoy its history and beauty. We support GVRDs efforts to create a safe, natural park that will be open for everyone to experience. Please feel free to contact us at (707) 648-9448 or glencovewaterfrontpark@hotmail.com.
Sincerely,
Glen Cove Community Association Board of Directors Ruth O. Fisher, Chairman of the Board
