2005 GCCA Newsletter CHAIRS CHIT-CHAT Are you ready to put away those umbrellas? If you dont already have a Spring To Do List, please take a look at the upcoming May/June G.C.C.A. Newsletter which is expected to contain some home improvement projects suitable for warm weather conditions. Rain-free days enticed Principal Gregory Allison, equipped with a new digital video camera, to trek to Glen Coves very own Newt Creek where he filmed California Newts. Thanks to the silent auction participants at last years G.C.C.A. General Meetings and new G.C.C.A. members who opt for a $5 donation to the neighborhood school, the $500 Sony equipment package was presented to the Glen Cove Elementary School as replacement for a similar camera stolen last summer. In his February 22nd thank you letter, Allison stated his plan to prepare a video on the natural history of the area, both for the school and the community. He further added, I am looking forward to seeing all the ways we can use the camera to enhance our program for students. The gift announcement was made at the recent G.C.C.A. General Meeting following Principal Allisons recollections and updates. Another topic on the February 17th agenda included the Fighting Back Partnership, introduced by Board President Kathy Hoffman, followed by Health Advocates Project Director John Allen, and supported by V.P.D. Sgt. Rick Florendo. Park Planner Hew Hesterman addressed the Greater Vallejo Recreation Districts effort to develop a new, overall master plan. The newly-elected G.C.C.A. Vice-Chair Janet Laine discussed the yet-to-be-completed Glen Cove Waterfront Park. Gratitude goes out to each of the invited speakers, other guests, neighbors, and G.C.C.A. Board Members who attended the Thursday night meeting. Thanks are also extended to Safeway for providing the refreshments. Leap into Spring! AND THE NEW The scenery in the vicinity of the Glen Cove Marina has been rapidly changing this year. A 2001 mid-summer landslide damaged the west side of the Marinas docks and partially blocked the main channel. Extensive repairs have been completed, the channel dredged, and the newly-renovated slips are now ready for use, accommodating boats up to 55 in length. The Glen Cove Marinas landmark structure, once stationed on pilings off shore of Vallejos Sandy Beach, served more than 40 years as a U.S. Coast Guard lighthouse. The 1910-constructed building is expected to undergo some restorative work in 2005, primarily a new roof installation and a fresh paint application. Adjacent to the Glen Cove Marina is the neighborhoods smallest housing development, Marina Estates. Residents have already moved into some of the seven homes as final touches and landscaping treatments are completed. Area hikers, once again, are using the Bay Area Trail section that edges the Glen Cove Marina and the Marina Estates subdivision. The pathway had been closed during the Marina Estates construction but has been improved and connects the Glen Cove Parkway to the Straits bluff view of the Carquinez and Zampa Bridges. Three
privately-owned, commercially-zoned parcels located north of the Glen Cove Marina
remain undeveloped GLEN COVE PARKWAY LITTER PICK-UP SET FOR EARTH DAY Volunteers interested in participating in the April 23rd event will meet at Glen Cove Realty (Glen Cove Parkway at Glen Cove Marina Road). POSITION LETTER (EDITORS NOTE: The following Glen Cove Community Association letter was submitted at the February 10, 2005, Greater Vallejo Recreation District Board Meeting.)
For nearly twenty years, residents of Vallejo and the Glen Cove Community Association (G.C.C.A.) have patiently looked forward to the opening of the Glen Cove Waterfront Park. We are encouraged that G.V.R.D. has arranged for the creation of a new master plan and that a decision will soon be made regarding the future of the Stremmel building. We are concerned, however, that proponents of the Vallejo Inter-Tribal Council (V.I.C.) continue to demand that this land be closed to the public. Contrary to the misleading campaign being waged by the V.I.C., the G.C.C.A. does not support the desecration of this land. In fact, we have clearly stated our desire that the Glen Cove Waterfront Park remain as natural and undisturbed as possible. The G.C.C.A. urges G.V.R.D. to preserve the Waterfront Park remain as natural and undisturbed as possible. The G.C.C.A. urges G.V.R.D. to preserve the important history of this land and to ensure the safety of visitors to the park site by implementing the following: * Removing buildings, including the Stremmel structure * Eliminating parking lots, restrooms, lighting, existing pavement, oil tanks, and other elements that destroy the peaceful, natural setting * Carefully preserving historic and culturally important sites by adding a protective layer of soil from re-graded areas * Planning appropriate trails and plantings to deter public access from sensitive areas * Removing fire hazards, including weed abatement and necessary pruning * Addressing other safety issues, such as trash removal and re-grading to correct improper drainage * Removing invasive plant species and re-planting low maintenance, slow-growing native varieties * Continuing the Bay Area Ridge Trail The G.C.C.A. supports the opening of the Glen Cove Waterfront Park so that all citizens can safely enjoy its history and beauty. We support G.V.R.D.s efforts to create a safe, natural park that will be open for everyone to experience. Please feel free to contact us at: glencovewaterfrontpark@hotmail.com or call (707) 648-9448. Sincerely, Glen Cove Community Association Board of Directors THANKS TO THE GLEN COVE SAFEWAY BAKERY STAFF The kick-off 2005 G.C.C.A. General Meeting, held February 17th, was sweetened by the generosity of the Glen Cove Safeway Bakery Department. As usual, the attending residents and visitors enjoyed the treat assortment donated by the neighborhood market. VALLEJO
