The trails accessed from the South Regatta Drive gate connect Glen Cove with Benicia State Park. Some of these trails and benches were built only within the last few years. Those responsible have done a great job improving an already fine park.

  

Along South Regatta Dr., near where it curves up a big hill becoming North Regatta Dr., there is a gate that provides access to trails that travel East into Benicia State Park, or West into the Glen Cove Waterfront Park area. These trails can also be reached by following a path East out of the waterfront park area.

 

 

Just inside the gate a sign indicates that these trails are part of the Bay Trail and Bay Area Ridge Trail networks.

Starting out West, the main trail makes a loop around a hill that separates Glen Cove from Benicia State Park.

The first of three benches that were recently installed. This one has a great view to the West of sunsets and the Carquinez Bridge.

 

 

The second bench faces South towards the hills between Crockett and Martinez. You can also see Mt. Diablo to the East.

Across the water from Glen Cove is Carquinez Strait Regional Shoreline , another good place to explore.

 

 

The third bench also has a great view.

Heading East now, looking at Southampton Bay and the great little city of Benicia.

Benicia State Park has a protected marsh, which serves as important wildlife habitat. The darkened area in the foreground is a botanical garden being constructed. It will feature plants which are native to California.

The trail on the right will take us back over the hill to the South Regatta gate. The sign says dogs must be on a leash.

 

 

Before leaving Benicia State Park, looking back at the trail we were on. If you have the time and energy, there's plenty more to explore in Benicia State Park before returning to Glen Cove.
