Glen Cove Waterfront Park Needs Your HELP!

The Glen Cove Community Association needs your help to make sure the long promised Glen Cove Waterfront Park becomes a reality! The 15 acre park site is located along the Carquinez Straight and is accessible from the cul-de-sac at the end of Whitesides Drive, off of South Regatta Drive. The land was purchased by the City of Vallejo with park dedication fees provided by the original developers of Glen Cove. It will be developed with public grant money, some derived from taxes we have paid. Please visit the site!

The park master plan and Environmental Impact Report have been prepared and will soon be voted on for approval by the Greater Vallejo Recreation District (GVRD)

It is a well thought out low intensity plan that focuses on preserving and protecting the natural and historic features of this unique waterfront area, removing safety hazards and improving accessibility. Significant elements include:

  • Protective measures to prevent disturbance of Native American artifacts below the ground surface in a specific area
  • A minimum of construction
  • Keep the area as natural as possible
  • Remove weeds, overgrowth, some non-native plants and fire hazards
  • Plant native grass, wildflowers, trees and shrubs
  • Protect the shoreline from erosion
  • Improve safe access to the shoreline
  • Remove dilapidated structures and hazards posing liability problems for the City
  • Eliminate standing water by improving drainage
  • Improve existing hiking trails and service roads; eliminate others not needed
  • A few picnic tables and benches
  • A small parking area and a single restroom (these features are the subject of review objections from some residents and may not be included in the final plan)

We are asking that you please write letters of support for this low intensity development park which can be e-mailed or sent by mail to the City Council, GVRD and the Opinions Page of the Times Herald Newspaper. Addresses are provided below. We are also encouraging residents to attend City Council meetings when this issue is to be discussed. Notices will be placed on our banner signs on the Parkway median. These actions are necessary to demonstrate that the residents of Glen Cove want this park. We need to be heard because if we don't make our strong support for this park known, our desires could be drowned out by some vocal opposition who insist nothing at all should be done to this area. Please discuss this issue with your neighbors and friends. Complete details of the master plan and EIR can be reviewed on GVRD's website, www.gvrd.org, or in person at their office located at 395 Amador Street.

NOW IT'S UP TO YOU. MAKE SURE THIS PARK WILL BECOME A REALITY TO BE ENJOYED BY YOUR FAMILY, NEIGHBORS, VALLEJO RESIDENTS AND VISITORS ALIKE. YOU HAVE ALREADY PAID FOR IT!
